SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ISSUE

The Delta Articles

Written By Phlygone

Introduction

In the last issue of the Delta Articles, I hinted at some changes to the way we do tourneys. In the past, winning a tourney didn't mean that much. I was a fairly small streamer who didn't have much money, so all I could offer was the tourney experience itself. Over the past year we have grown quite rapidly, growing from 6 members to 86 members. However we have many "members" now distributed across Twitch, Discord & Twitter who have gotten really involved as well.  A lot of the people who joined our tourneys were just doing it for fun. Since our tourneys have always been free, it has increased attendance and allowed many to succeed in a low risk space and grow their gameplay. From the vets in ProFrog, XYZard & JinAxel to the newer players like Legyro & ShadowTagPorygon, every competition has been fun and unique. Below you can watch a highlight reel of all the finals matches over the last year that shows how fun this environment can be:
However, there is always an opportunity to improve on the way we do things here, and today is an exciting day. The main complaint about our tourneys has always been the lack of prizes. However, if I charged an admission fee, I wouldn't have ever met any of you. The Phlygone Championship Series [or PCS] solves the problem of simultaneously demanding a high level of play at a low risk to the players, and does that in a fun and dynamic way.

The Phlygone Championship Series [PCS]

Written by Phlygone
The Phlygone Championship Series is the combination of the fourteen individual Phlygone tourneys throughout the year, or Season. There will still be winners of each of these individual tourneys; however, Championship Points, or PCS Points, will also be awarded depending on your performance. Even if you do not do well in a tourney, you get rewarded points just for participation. However, if you leave a tourney that is in progress, or you are caught cheating in anyways, you receive a PCS penalty. This is to encorage tourney participation and discourage dropping out, as just finishing in a tourney is an acomplishment!

In addition to tourneys, you are also awarded PCS Points by completing The Delta Articles: Battle Arcades. If you are unfamiliar with Battle Arcade, its a unique challenge that gives you a handicap on ladder but shows your ability to play outside of the meta. You can find these bimonthly challenges on the Delta Articles tab.

The Season begins and ends on Febuary 1st of each year. After each tourney, the PCS tourney points will be tabulated at the bottom of Tourneys tab. A tally of each players points will be placed there. This will be updated ASAP, as this is a work in progress.

At the end of the season, the points can be refunded and awards are given out, including Player of The Year [Champion], Rookie of the Year [The Wally Award] , Most Improved [The Youngster Joey Award] & Most Creative [The Viola Award]. However, the most exciting thing about the Phlygone Champion Series is that everyone can win at least something depending on their Place and Point Total. I will explain the rewards in a bit, but before I do, lets go into detail on how you are going to rack up points.

Tourney Line-Up And Scoring

Each Season will be broken down into four parts: Spring Split, Summer League, Fall Split & Winter League. The Fall and Spring Split compile of 6 one day tourneys, with three Swiss-Style tourneys and three Double Elimination tourneys each. This is to diversify the gaming experience, between a more lax competitive style and a stricter one. If you are unfamiliar with either style of tourney, this will be laid out before you compete in one.

Next are the Summer and Winter Leagues. The format is the Phlygone Draft-Style, where each player drafts a team and plays an extended tourney. Each league lasts an extended a period of time over breaks and require a little bit more time commitment. That is why the awards are so much higher for the leagues than they are for the splits.
Either way, the way you preform awards a certain amount of points. Note that participation in each tourney awards points, so it encourages you to attend tourneys for formats that may not prefer. This allows us to get better numbers for less popular formats. Also note that the OU Tourney from Feb 5th is on this list. That is because you will be awarded points for your performance retroactively. Note that all other tourneys are ommitted as they are from Season 0.

However, there will be consequences for negative actions. Cheating in any form may receive an appropriate amount of PCS point loss. It is important note these No Show and Leave Penalty rules.
  1. If you do not register for a tourney, you will not receive any penalty, AKA No Show.
  2. If you register for a tourney, but let me know that you cannot attend the tourney 24 hours in advance, you receive no penalty. This is equivalent to a No Show.
  3. If you leave the tourney midway through, or do not notify me before 24 hours, you receive the leave penalty. However if there is an extreme emergency, you may be exempt from the penalty.
  4. It is possible to attain negative points.
Note that negative points from the last tourney will also be applied to this seasons scores.

Lastly, there is one extra way to score points The Battle Arcade. Every valid Battle Arcade submission awards 1 point, where an article feature awards 2 points. The only Battle Arcade that will be retroactively added will be Brave Little Toaster Battle Arcade from last issue, as it was published in the month of February.

Rewards

Now that we know how and when to score in PCS, lets get into the rewards! I'm really excited to feature two ways to earn rewards, The Kanto 13 and the Game Corner. In The Kanto 13, top 13 players from PCS receive some really sick rewards. Here they are:

Just to clarify, one would attain everything below your rank as well. Therefore the Champion gets a sweater, a highlight video and custom artwork! The sweater would be custom made. We do not have a design yet, but it will have Phlygone Championship Series Winner on the front and your username on the hood.

Next comes the Game Corner. Clam10000 has volunteered his services to gen mons for the league, but was finding it difficult to make mons for the regularity of the tourneys we have. Game Corner circumvents that, by allowing you to cash in your acquired PCS Poins for prizes, just like you would at the Game Corner (or Dave and Busters).

Mind you that you can mix and match rewards! For example, if you have 80 Points, you can get 1 Custom, 1 Ditto and 1 StaffMon, or you can get 4 StaffMons, or you can get a Ditto and 2 StaffMons. The opportunities are endless!
Lastly, there are Awards. At the end of the season, we will have an awards ceremony where I will announce the Kanto 13 winners, and I give special honors to certain players, including but not limited to  Player of The Year [Champion], Rookie of the Year [The Wally Award] , Most Improved [The Youngster Joey Award] & Most Creative [The Viola Award].  Rewards for the other awards have not been determined yet, and other awards may be determined. Basically, play in our tourneys, who knows what else you can get!
